there’s a time and a place

there’s a time and a place developed out of my reflections and visual experiences from over two years of walking through Riverdale Park.

This body of work references a repetitive practice of locating oneself in time and space - geographically rooting into a familiar landscape and affirming a sense of identity through repeated action. The art created in response to this walking practice acts as remnant or document of a lived experience and an exploration of relationship to place and time. I wonder, how can I convey a sense of belonging to this place? How can I represent the sense of connection and affection a place has imprinted on me?

In the walking practice and the paintings that followed, I engaged in a process of repetition - worrying the ground with my feet, burnishing the grass and then the pavement on my path between home and work.  Repeatedly dividing and painting each panel into prismatic, pie-piece segments, echoing the angles of light seen as I crossed the bridge through the park, walked through urban green space and across concrete-covered city blocks.

The consistency of my near-daily walks across the same route created a soothing framework of time and place. There are familiar faces I saw each day, strangers, yet together-villagers of a shared time-specific geography.  Walking and painting encouraged a sense of wonder at the everyday, the incidental and the mundane.

The paintings in this series are a document of this walking practice and aim to convey a glimmer – of colour, of hope, of delight and connection.
