pound of flesh/ flesh of my flesh
pound of flesh/flesh of my flesh is an installation work iterated in connection with the sculpture series giving it my all, exploring themes of womanhood, motherhood and self-sacrifice. In this work ceramic objects are placed and photographed in a domestic setting: the kitchen, the laundry room, the dinner table. This work aims to speak to the experience of motherhood in which it’s often felt that we’re leaving pieces of ourselves in everything that we do, that we can’t possibly stretch ourselves far enough to meet every need. I see these objects with affection, they might ever so slightly allude to the grotesque - a lump of flesh - but to hold one is to feel its weight as a comfort in the hand, the glaze is soft and smooth, the texture in the surface becomes an opportunity to worry the surface with one’s fingers, to soothe through touch.
